Flamingo Resort Hotel & Conference Center

Since I don't get TV stations at my house, hotels are an excuse to kick back and channel surf. Sadly the Flamingo doesn't see investing in basic cable as valuable. Not only was there none of the basics you get at Motel 6 (VH1, TLC, etc.) they didn't have the Food Network. This is shocking in that Santa Rosa is doing its utmost to position itself as a foodie capital. And I believe they event have a Food Network celebrity in this town as well.
Distance to the downtown would be the only other neg here, but overall for under $100 room rate (gotta love conference rates) it's ok.

While its relative proximity to Mt. Shasta makes Weed a natural fit for a veggie-vegan restaurant, it's a bit incongruous in this keeping it real town located off the I-5. But it's a great option for those nights that Pizza Kitchen doesn't cut it.
As mentioned by the other reviewer, Buddha Belly is more in the hippy-trance genre, as evidenced by the symbiosis gathering flier I picked up there this last time around. However, the food is quite good, ranging from make-your-own sandwiches to fresh soups to premade grain and pasta salads. This time around we picked up tempeh sandwiches to go, along with their fantastic savory scones.
No doubt there's a scene here in the evenings, but we've never timed it such that we can see it first hand. I hear there's drums involved, but as long as the food stays as good as it's been, that's fine by me.
Bread's still kick **s though. Black Butte break, cinnamon loaf, and a striated loaf with poppy seed made me realize that I cannot adhere to a carb-free lifestyle.

My boyfriend's parents, who've lived in Bend for over 25 years, swear by this place for their daily (literally) bread. Having had ample opportunity to sample a wide variety of the Village Baker's products, ranging from wheat loaves to blueberry muffins to their fantastic ciabatta-like rolls, I have no problem giving them 5 stars for the quality of their breads alone.
While I've never had coffee there (perhaps the BF's parents are in the know already), I love going there if only to ogle the delectable looking and very artisan like cookies, scones, and breads behind the case. The staff are great, very friendly and helpful - whether you're a local or not.
Foodwise, I've only ordered shortbread and smaller items that they get from the Village Bakery - but then again, why would you care about the food at a coffee shop?

Heavenly Village Cinemas

Nice to see a few more off-beat options playing, but it's still primarily mainstream movies here. Art house and indie stuff you'll have to go off the hill for.

It gets 4 stars for simply being a cinema *not* located in a smoky casino. As a multi-plex this movie theater doesn't offer the enormous screens film purists may prefer, but if you're in the mood to see a mainstream, first run movie, this place is way nicer than the Horizon theaters - newer facility and a nicer surrounding environment (village vs. casino).
Coupla negatives that have to be mentioned. Why cash ONLY? At $10 a pop (a bit less if you make a matinee) it would be a lot more customer friendly to offer alternative payment methods, but maybe I'm just thinking crazy thoughts. And while a full-fledged art house cinema is a pipe dream here, would it kill them to feature a non-mainstream flick once in awhile? Consider it a cultural offering to this wasteland.
The rest of the store seemed to cater to people for whom processed snack food is one of the four major food groups. In a city that is otherwise filled with stores that seem to herald the bounty of the Pacific Northwest, this place is a sad anomaly.
That said, the bf's mother *did* find her bactine. It was so old the label was peeling off it, but she bought it anyway.

Thunderbird Lodge Historic Site

Thunderbird Lodge, on Tahoe's east shore just south of Sand Harbor, is easily one such treasure. Built by eccentric millionaire George Whittell Jr., this lodge was only opened to the public for tours in 2002. It's well worth the trip, which now costs around $40 and includes a shuttle from the Incline Village visitors center about 15 minutes up the road.
Besides indulging in a taste for tunnels and mahogany boats, Whittell also became one of the first (inadvertent) conservationists in the area, and learning about his land purchase in addition to his love of large animals and cards makes for an educational trip on the shores of Lake Tahoe.
Thunderbird is only open during the summer into early autumn, with limited tours daily, so it's wise to reserve in advance.

Whole Foods Market

Despite my snark, I have to admit that it's nice to see an enormous, clean and well stocked yuppie market in Reno finally. Now that this town has been rated by National Geographic as a top outdoors place to live in, it needs the retail to support that (and I don't mean another REI). For myself, I'm too cheap to look seriously at this place for my regular shopping needs, but for lunch and the odd stopover, it's awesome. Beautiful produce, drool inducing cheese selections and a bakery that would break my budget if I bought everything that struck my fancy.
Plus it's proximity to the freeway (for those of us who do our shopping based on distance from the 395 or 80) makes it an ideal stop to/from the airport.

There is an impressive selection of exhibits in this space, and an extensive array of comic strips. I was there for a conference, so our group had the museum - and its adorable elderly docents - to ourselves. It was like having your grandparents with you, only they were just *so* excited to talk to you about Charles Schultz and the arcane facts that most of us have no idea about. Truly adorable. I'm still trying to find the snarky heartless me, which I think withered up and died somewhere in this museum.
Plus I came away with a Lucy for President button, and that, to me, is priceless.
Overall a definite must-visit for even the most heartless of folks.
